Precor Elliptical Cross Trainer

In Sept. we purchased a Precor Elliptical Cross trainer. The Global Fitness shipped the Precor with a trucking firm that did not deliver to this area. When it didn't arrive at the time specified I emailed and recieved a call back that the Precor was on a loading dock in Washington {we live in Oregon}. On line it showed the Precor still in California. It was next transferred to another trucking firm and after several more calls we learned we would have to borrow a truck to meet the truck 'delivering' the Precor, transfer to borrowed truck to get it to our house.
Global Fitness saw my review, called and told me they would refund shipping if I would delete my review. I was unwise enough to 'delete' the review. That was the last time we heard from them...and no refund.

I Have the Precor 9.21i - Older Version of This Model

I purchased my Precor 9.21i over 8 years ago and have used it almost daily since then. It appears this model is an updated version of that machine, so it should give you some idea of what to expect. There have been no maintenance problems; once a year, my husband takes the front cover off and vacuums it out. Conversely, my son-in-law purchased a True treadmill two years ago and has had to have repeated repairs.

I looked at all the treadmills out there before purchasing this one. I found its ergonomics to be superior to others - I'm 5'2" tall and some of the models had handrails that were very uncomfortable for my size.

I use my treadmill on the manual setting and like the fact that if I'm interrupted it doesn't go into a sleep mode and lose my time/distance. I generally walk at 3.4 mph and a 15% incline - having reduced my speed from 4 mph and a bit lower incline due to aging feet. One of the factors that weighed into my decision was the fact that Precor allows a greater incline than some others.

If you are going to spend the money on a good treadmill, I definitely recommend the Precor models.

Really durable,

Wonderful machine. I find this a great way to work out or to warm up before lifting weights at the gym. This machine is the kind you find at health clubs. It's extremely durable and sturdy.

I love this machine!!!! This is the best machine ever!

When I first starting using this machine I worked out for about 10 minutes and thats all I could handle. Within a week I worked up to 20 or 30 minutes and then increased it to 1 hour 3 to 4 times a week. What I love about this machine is you get immidiate results. I am 5'7 and I went from around 155-160 pounds to 130 pounds in about 6 weeks. I went from a size 10 fitting tightly to a size 4. I had it set on interval training I beleive. I saw most of the weight loss in my hip, thigh, butt area. I have never felt better in my life than I do when I use this machine on a regular basis. You will be sore initially and it takes a lot of will power to stay on it but if you do you will definately get results. I usually would make sure my hair is up and keep a fan blowing on me for comfort or I could not make it through the workout as well as watch tv to keep my mind off of the excercise. I used mine at the gym. I would love to have one for home, just haven't saved the money yet.

The Best Elliptical EVER

After reading the other review, I felt compelled to write one of my own. I LOVE this elliptical, and while I don't own one either, I have been using this elliptical for over a year, four days a week for between 35-60 minutes at my local YMCA, and it's awesome. It's extremely sturdy; I weigh around two hundred pounds and this machine has never budged not even a little bit under my considerable weight. It has a lot of different programs, and the incline and resistance can be adjusted with the press of one button. Users can enter their weight and age so they can see how many calories are being burned during the workout, and while I don't know how accurate the calorie reading is, I find that being able to see how many more calories I'm burning by increasing my speed or incline is very motivating.

Now I do agree with the other reviewer on one point, which is that the cup holder is too close to the swinging handles. So if my water bottle is too tall, the handles keep bumping into it, but other than that small quibble, this is the best elliptical EVER.

BEST ELIPTICAL!!

This is reliable & sturdy. I love the digital features including calories burned, although I don't know how accurate it is. But it IS motivational, just like the other person said below. It's got a great variety of inclines, resistance, etc. so you will not get bored. I love keeping track of my heart rate too, since I don't own a personal heart rate monitor. Worth every penny!!!

An unusually enjoyable workout

Quick Rundown...

PROS:
-Very sturdy, no rocking
-Glides smoothly and quietly
-Fantastic support for your lower body, especially your knees
-Variety of useful program options as well as the ability to create your own routines
-Ability to set different types of goals
-Gives you a great workout without putting strain on your joints

CONS:
-Some issues with accessing the cupholder during workouts
-"Time remaining" estimates not very useful
-Calories burned seems much higher than it should be
-Very pricy
-Console layout a little confusing at first

The Full Story...

I've used this machine many times at my local gym and I am always impressed by how stable it is and how smoothly it moves. I actually enjoy the motion so much that I hardly notice that I'm sweating and my heartrate is up. The digital display is clear enough, though I think the layout of the buttons isn't as intuitive as the Precor EFX 835, which is the other elliptical I use regularly. I also prefer the 835's up/down switches for resistance and incline over the 546i's arrow buttons, but it's not a big deal. I do agree that the cupholder is too close to the moving handlebars, and there's always an element of danger in trying to get a drink of water when you're pedaling.

In terms of the machine's functionality, I love the variety of program options and the ability to set various kinds of goals, including time, calories and heartrate. I also appreciate that it tries to calculate the amount of time left to reach your goal, though the estimates aren't always terribly accurate and they don't seem to account for upcoming changes in resistance in the preprogrammed routines.

Most importantly though, I always get a great workout using this elliptical. When I get off of it I feel sweaty and invigorated instead of sweaty and sore, which is how some of the cheaper ellipticals and pretty much all treadmills make me feel. I wish I could afford to have one of these at home!

Almost gym-quality

I bought the Precor 5.17i. on sale from Sport Chalet for $2,000 plus tax. It is very smooth and quiet. It is lacking a hand-grip pulse monitor, but it does work with chest-strap pulse monitors.
I tried other brands that were cheaper, but they felt cheap and wobbly. The Precor machines are solid and stable.
Overall, I am very happy with the 5.17i.

Solid machine

I have had mine for a number of years. It gets daily, hard use from both myself and my children.

The machine is smooth, solid, and always performs well.

I originally bought it because I used a Precor at a health club for several years. The health club had several other elliptical makes; I preferred the Precors. The differences between this model and the club model are not all that great, certainly not worth paying more money for. For example, this model has a painted steel front ramp on which the wheels roll up and down; the next model up has an aluminum ramp; both ramps do the same job well.

As part of the deal, I received a heart monitor that fits over my chest. The monitor works fine, but I do not use it much.

Better than most home elliptical machines

I purchased this elliptical machine brand new, a few years ago, to alternate with running. I have had other elliptical machines; however, this allows users to obtain a high level of perceived exertion when kept at a high resistance, 15 or 16, out of 20. The ability to adjust incline, benefits all muscles in the lower body, focusing on a few at a time if necessary. It is an added bonus if you do not hang onto the handle bars, giving you the ability to also use your inner core muscles for balance. Yes it is expensive, but if you are one who really works out hard and consistently, it is worth the price.

Disappointing product from Precor = junk.

I'm familiar with home, institutional and commercial gym equipment. I currently have a Precor commercial grade treadmill, elliptical and recumbent bike. I have considered Precor's commercial products to be one of the best commercial fitness equipment manufacturers in the market. I recently ordered and received from Amazon a Precor home gym adjustable multi-angle bench. I bought this product based on my past Precor experience and I wanted a bench that was lighter duty so it is easier to handle in a home gym environment. What a disappointment when I took this piece of junk out of the box. Cheap is the best way to describe the quality of the product. I would be better off lift weights using an ironing board to lie on. I was preparing to purchase a Precor Functional Trainer for my next piece of home equipment but after this experience I will look for another manufacture that can design and build a decent home gym product.

I got this used at a garage sale, so can't speak to it's shipping etc.

Pro's - Very comfortable. Plenty of cushion. I'm 6'1 and head & butt both fit fine on it. Wheels at the top for easy movement. It's wide enough to provide support but not too wide to effect range of motion. Seat adjusts for incline support (some seats don't!). Back goes up to about 85 degreeish so good for military press. On flat bench it holds about 350lbs of combined weight with no problem.

Con's (nothing major) - No decline. there is no wobble when i lay on it, but i see a little side to side base wobble when i set it up. Adjustments work well, except to get to the 85 degree angle, gotta muscle it a little bit, but not too bad.

Overall good solid bench for flat, incline & military. The current amazon price $325 seems a bit high but it works well.

The RBK 815 exercise bike feature a 14-inch step-through design with a low, 4-inch step-over height to make it easier to mount. Console handlebars help with entry and exit, while the riding handle bars provide optional hand and arm positioning and heart rate monitoring. The custom-designed, patent-pending air flex seat features a ventilated panel and a unique suspension system for a cool, cushioned ride. Using one hand, you can easily adjust the seat to any of 11 positions, whether you're on or off the bike.

Designed for Knee Over Pedal Spindle (KOPS) biomechanics, the seat is at an optimal position for more efficient pedaling and reduced shear force on the knee. This places the forward knee directly over the ball of the foot (or pedal spindle) when the pedals are in a horizontal position. Dual-sided pedals allow you to use them with or without the integrated straps. The pedals are extra-wide to comfortably accommodate feet of all sizes and ensure proper pedaling form.

Among the bike's other highlights is an LCD console that offers a clear, familiar layout and displays data such as calories burned, distance traveled, speed, time elapsed, time remaining, and percent complete. A convenient tap control provides an audible click when you press a key. Drink and accessory holders are conveniently located and ideal for portable music players. The bike is also equipped with handy transport wheels.

The RBK 815 sports a two-stage drive system that yields smooth, comfortable, quiet operation with a lower start-up resistance and more consistent resistance progression than typical single-stage drive systems. The three-piece crank tightens positively, reducing the need for periodic adjustments, and the 170-millimeter crank arm accepts any standard road or mountain bike pedal. An easy-to-remove shroud ensures quick access to the belt-drive system for maintenance and servicing without having to remove the pedals or crank.

The bike's steel frame has been treated with a two-step powder coating process for a rust-resistant undercoat and a cosmetic topcoat. Pedal axles and bearings are designed for smooth operation and exceptional durability. The bike measures 67 inches long by 49 inches high by 23 inches wide and weighs 210 pounds.

I had used an older model PreCor at a local gym, having compared it to Cybex as well as StarTac. Without any reservation I recommend this recumbent bike as being very very well made, not too difficult to assemble (most of it is already). Great resistance as well as many programs designed to keep interest. High recommendation.

The Precor E FT 546i commercial series elliptical fitness cross-trainer is a solid machine that is built to mirror the natural movements of the body. The natural and smooth movement of this machine will give an outstanding workout without harshly impacting the joints. It is designed to move fluidly, and is very easy to operate and offers an intensive cardiovascular workout, as well as an intensive workout for the gluts and quadriceps. The Precor EFT 546i elliptical has an adjustable cross ramp that allows users to select an angle between fifteen and forty degrees. This allows for isolation of the hamstrings, calves, quads and gluts. The stride lengths of this machine vary, ranging from 21.2-Inch to 24.7-Inch. This makes the workout comparable on what you would receive on a stair climber. The machine has ten programs that are preset, including a program that is designed to test the users’ fitness level. The Precor EFT 546i also has the ability to change to a new workout program at any point during the workout. The display console is a very attractive design and is easy to use. It has very large buttons, and immediately responds to users’ request. It also contains a six-phase generator, which allows for reduced friction when necessary. Awesome in everyway

This is one of the best cardio machine you can own. I have it for five years and it works just liekthe first day. Can't say that for any other machine. I'm thinking this thing can last forever.

Fantastic machine!

This is the one I use at my apartment gym. I love it for a variety of reasons detailed below. The first is that it is comfortable and very adjustable. I tried a Life Fitness elliptical at the gym and hated it. It didn't seem to fit right and the adjustment capability was not as good as the Precor. In addition on level 1 it was much more difficult than the comparable Precor elliptical. I like to adjust depending on what I am working on - sometimes I got for fat loss, or cardio or strength - and the Precor allows me to do all this with a greater variance of levels.

I also like the readout on the Precor. It is nicely contrasted and you can view it at all angles. The red on the other machine just didn't seem as easy to see to me. I like the quick start on Precor and I often use that and go with a manual workout.

The bars on the Precor feel better to me and I can grasp them easier - they are thicker than the bars on other machines I've used. They are also more convenient for me (I'm short).

Overall this is my favorite machine. I've lost 23 lbs and many inches since starting this back in September of 2010. I adjusted my diet as well and the combo has brought my triglyceride level from 337 to 82. Thanks Precor!

This was a very good experience. I was very skeptical about ordering something that cost this much money without actually looking at it in person first. The product only took about 3 weeks to reach my house and it was shipped from California and I live in Alabama. That included having someone come out to my house and set it up. I have been using it at least 4 days a week since I got it. It feels just like the one I use at the gym but I get to do it in my own house. It is such a convenience to jump on it at my own house since I have a two year old it is hard to actually go to the gym. All I can say, It was a great experience. I would definitely recommend this product.

That part was for the people with a lot to do, or maybe a short attention span. If you've got the time, here goes the full review with all the gory details.

I just moved into a new house about a week before receiving this treadmill. I had already set aside one bedroom as an exercise room. I was excited about it, and so I went to the Precor website to see what I could see. On the site they have a "Space Planner" that allows you to create a blueprint-style layout of the room you plan on using the equipment in. It's very cool because it shows you the exact size of the machine in relation to the room. For me, it was a pretty scary revelation because the room isn't all that big, but it worked out fine in the end.

=== SHIPPING / MOVING ===

Shipping is a big deal with an item of this size, so I'm going to talk about it even though it has no impact on my rating because it is not indicative of the item itself. The box containing the treadmill is shipped freight to your door in a box that is over 7 feet long and could pretty easily contain at least two or three full grown men. It weighs in at almost 350 pounds. It's important to keep this in mind -- if you plan on keeping the treadmill in your garage, then you're in luck. The driver will load the crate into your garage for you and you're all set.

I wasn't so lucky. First, my garage is filled with still-packed boxes from the move, a motorcycle and a couple of kayaks that I haven't found a place for yet. There was no getting ANYTHING in there. And even if I could, the garage is in the opposite direction from the "exercise room", so there was no point in putting it there. Well, I guess there's some sort of legal reason, but the shipping guy would not bring the crate into the house. He set it down in front of my door and watched me while I opened it, carrying all of the small pieces into the house and finally dragging the massive bottom piece inside with extreme difficulty, all on my own. When I had finally gotten it all inside, he took his palette back and said goodbye.

So then I started the process of moving everything into the bedroom. I had to do this on my own. Don't. It was awful. Have someone there to help you. It would not fit through the bedroom door, the largest piece (the whole bottom portion is already assembled from the factory) was over 6.5 feet long, about 3 feet wide, and weighed nearly 300 pounds, which was not evenly distributed. The heavier end did have wheels on it, but these are only good when you're in an area wide enough to keep them on the ground.

=== INSTALLATION ===

Okay, so on to the installation. I received a sheet along with the treadmill that offered free professional installation for a limited time, by calling a toll-free number. It said "Offer Expires November 9, 2009", so you may or may not get one with yours, I can't honestly say for sure. But apparently a Precor expert comes to your house to put the machine together. This can still be done without the coupon, but I guess they normally charge a fee to do so.

I decided not to take them up on their offer for two reasons: First, it didn't look that bad. And second, I wanted to be able to include the setup in my review of the product.

The only tool you need to put the treadmill together is a phillips head screwdriver. Any other required tools are already included in the box. In the instructions, they recommend having a second person to help out. I found this unnecessary, although it certainly would have been helpful in connecting the display. Even by myself, it didn't take long to set up. With the main belt housing in position, place the uprights one at a time and screw them on with the provided allen wrench. Place the arm rest/crossbar piece on top of the uprights, tighten with the allen wrench. Plug in the display, set on top of the crossbar and tighten with the allen wrench. Screw the water bottle holders on with the screwdriver, and you're done. The instructions are clear and thorough, and it would be pretty hard to mess up if you're following them.

=== LOOK/FEEL/SOUND/TASTE ===

Okay, I admit I didn't taste the treadmill.

This thing looks like a high end commercial grade treadmill. You'd expect to see it in a REALLY nice gym. It has a beautiful brushed aluminum style with a firm, dark gray rubber on the arms and a large display console that shows a lot of information at once.

The running deck is solid and is mounted on pieces that give in slightly on impact. It's hardly noticeable to the eye, but noticeably easier on the joints. It feels an awful lot better than whatever suspension system they use on some of the lower-end treadmills.

The motor and belt are pretty quiet, too. Of course it does make some noise, but it's really not much. If my girlfriend is on the treadmill in the bedroom with the door open and I'm in the living room, I can hear a slight whisper if there is no ambient noise around. If she closes the door, I can't hear anything.

=== FUNCTIONS ===

A number of different workout modes are available, but I'm not going to go into them in too much depth. Much of this information is readily available in the product description, and I don't want to just regurgitate information that is readily available at the top of the page. But I like the programs that are offered. And as the programs are running, you can make any changes as you see fit, like speeding up or changing the incline to suit your needs. And it will remember your choices. For example, the default "Weight Loss" program is 30 minutes of alternating 3-degree incline and flat segments. Now let's say you're in the middle of a 3-degree incline segment and you want to change your speed to 2.5 mph and your incline to 4 degrees. From that point forward, EVERY incline segment during your current workout will default to 4 degrees at 2.5 mph unless you change it again.

I also like the "Walk in the Park" program which simulates the uneven terrain of an outdoor jogging trail by making small adjustments to the incline over the course of the program.

I also like the "Pacer" feature that shows you how you're doing in relation to your previous best run on a given program.

The treadmill enters a "cool down" period for 5 minutes after each program, which slows you down gently to a walking pace. This is supposedly better for your body than just coming to a complete stop. After the cool down period, you will be shown your overall stats (assuming you're using one of the user profiles), such as how far you have gone, how many calories you've burned, time spent, etc. since you started using the treadmill.

=== DISPLAY ===

The treadmill display shows a lot of good information. It's important to me to have a display that doesn't require a million key presses to get to the info I want to see. Starting from the upper left, there is a full-time calorie burn counter, then on the right is the heart rate and the heart rate scale under that. The big center display shows the program you're running, where you are within the program, and what incline changes are coming up. Then there's a single-line scrolling display that can show you the program completion percentage, alert you to an upcoming change in belt speed, as well as display a number of different metrics including max heart rate, average heart rate, etc.

The four numerical displays along the bottom, from left to right, are Time (Elapsed or Remaining, selectable with a toggle button), current incline in degrees, current speed, and another button-selectable field (Average Speed, Pace, and Distance Traveled).

There's a piece along the front of the display that allows you to hold an open book or magazine in place, as well. And there's a big pocket at the top for holding a selection of said reading material.

=== GADGETRY ===

The treadmill has two different ways to monitor your heartbeat. The first way is to hold on to the two handles under the display, on either side of the red "Stop" button. After a few seconds it'll get a lock on your pulse and display the information as both a number and on a scale (Warm up ---> Fat Burning ---> Cardio ---> Peak High). If you don't want to use the handles, it also comes with a really nifty wireless chest strap that sends the information to the treadmill. I have no idea how that thing works. It doesn't even take a battery, but somehow it's beaming information around. I prefer the chest strap because I don't want to be holding those handlesevery time I want to see my heart rate.

There's also this self-adjusting belt speed thing that the Precor calls "Integrated Footplant Technology". However they do it, it measures the speed of your feet as they hit the belt and makes minute adjustments to perfectly simulate moving over a stationary surface. It eliminates that awkward sensation you sometimes get when your stride gets a little bit out of sync with the moving belt. I don't feel like I can satifactorily verbally explain how awesome this feature is, but believe me -- it's really cool!

From the looks of it, Precor has a serious arsenal of good equipment on the market. The 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill is their flagship consumer treadmill for 2009, and it delivers in every way. I could not find a complaint in installation, build quality, use, or feature set. Is it worth the cost? As with most purchases, this is a question you'd have to answer for yourself. I can tell you this: if you look at the price, and then look at the treadmill in person, and maybe use it for a bit, your response would be, "Okay. I get it."

Also, the Precor website has a very useful product comparison tool that will give you everything you need to know about the price differences throughout its product line. I've seen a lot of awful comparison tools that give you no good insight, but this one works. And if you can't justify buying this one, maybe there's another one that will work better for you.

The AB-X is a wonderful value and the only way to go for a piece of home gym equipment. Solid construction, durable system for consistent, reliable workouts for the core muscles groups, specifically the abs and related muscles. The integrity of assembled unit is such that you have confidence to push yourself without injury as you sometime feel on less quality machines. One note as it relates to assembly, two people are needed due the weight of components and some tricky geometries needed when bolting together certain sub-assemblies. Only dissapointment, lack of useful customer support from Precor with respect to assembly and use documentation, either hardcopy or on-line. Shipment/delivery was flawless & painless contributing to the value of purchasing from Amazon. Price, robust material & construction, ease of assembly and quality of workout all combine for a 5 star value rating. My wife and I are thrilled with our purchase. If you desire productive abdominal/core workouts, then the AB-X is the machine for you.

Ab machine is just like health club

We searched around and found the best price for this item on Amazon and within days had it delivered to the door which was great, because it's heavy. As instructions said, takes about 45 minutes to put together - not very difficult and pieces are large so not too tedious. My husband used this at the health club and loves it so bought it for home. Sturdy, quality construction - as with any exercise machine, brings results if you use it!

This Machine Has Anything I Need For Strength Building!

I bought this system to help recover after a serious accident left me with decreased strength and range of motion in my arms. It does that and much more.

One thing that sold me on the unit was its size. Be sure to check the room you want to put it in, because it is tall. Other than that, it's compact and stays out of the way. It's easy to move the weights so that more than one person can use them or for different focus.

This is a great system for me. I'm very happy with it.

I am enjoy using the functional trainer. It is easy to adjust & you can perform almost any movement you choose. This machine is not for the serious lifter the weights are light, but for an individual looking to keep some tone it is great.

Not adequate for most guys

For the record, I don't own a S3.23 but I used one at a fitness store nearby b/c I'm in the market for a functional trainer. I liked the design but a major problem is that each weight stack only goes to 150-lbs and the 1:2 ratio means you can only get 75-lbs resistance. This obviously isn't designed for most guys who can lift heavier weights. I kept thinking that with a bench the most I could press is 150-lbs which is worthless to me. If you could expand the weight stacks I'd get one, otherwise the S3.23 is for an average woman who wants to do high rep work with lighter weights. Not worth it IMO for the price tag.

Problems from the start

As usual, dealing with Amazon was smooth and effortless and they even had a Concierge service to check on shipment progress. Receipt of shipment was within 1 week of order which is acceptable for WA to FL. The shipper called ahead, was friendly but made delivery to a residence with just a pallet jack and no dolly to get the system inside of the door as white gloves service was supposed to provide. This is a very heavy and cumbersome system and the shipper did however help me get the item to the our back ground level deck which was helpful, so overall shipping was good especially considering it is free.

Regarding the Precor AMT, most people reading this review know it is a solid system and may be more familiar with the previous 100i version. As a mechanical design engineer, I attest to it being a robust design with over-sized bearings and high quality cast and welded components. The fit and finish is very good and the design is well thought out. It is very smooth and quiet, and provides a low impact cardiovascular workout...as well it should for MSRP of $8,795. I paid $7,399 with free shipping during the sale after Thanksgiving. Also, if you expect as I did that it is American made you will be disappointed to find that it is also made overseas. I thought if you spent this much money for a Commercial grade trainer you should see a "Made is USA" sticker like Cybex.

Since Precor is also representing this unit for sale to home uses, they need to change the rollers they use to move the system around. For a 100 lb. system these rollers would be too narrow, so for a 450 lb. system they are like engraving wheels on any surface other that concrete or tile (as long as the tile is set perfectly with no voids or it could crack your tile). We have extremely hard Hickory floors and a short 4" pull proved exactly what we knew from looking at the wheels, they leave marks. These two marks were not a problem for us as the floors are hand scraped distressed, but we did end up using plywood strips to move the system into place and the plywood was severely rutted from the narrow wheels and heavy weight. Any home user not noticing this issue or trusting Precor's design will be sincerely disappointed when they damage their floors. Wide and flat roller skate wheels would solve this problem and would add very little to the cost.

Assembly is very easy and the documentation is good. Upon first use, half the display was not working and I was certain I assembled everything correctly and carefully. I called Precor and they answered quickly and I spoke to a friendly and knowledgeable representative. She mentioned that it could either be the Metrics board or the connection to the board and even described to me where it was located on the circuit board assembly. She said a local company would contact me within 48 hours and then arrange an appointment. I have been through this before and knew we could see a week or more go by before the unit was fixed and I was ready to use the system. As I am well versed in mechanical and electrical components, I took the operator console apart, grounded my hand, and found that on the circuit board one connector was lose and one was not connected at all. I carefully pressed them back together and assembled the console and installed it back on the trainer. Once it started up, the display was working with all functions seemingly operational.

I started my workout with a Polar heart rate strap [just as I successfully use at the gym for the Precor AMT 100i] and initially all seemed fine. After just a couple minutes the heart rate reading stopped, became erratic, and then completely failed to show the heart rate... just showing the solid read heart symbol which should be blinking. I even tested the the hand sensors and they worked once then failed thereafter...never to work again. I finished my workout and later my wife experienced the same problem. The next day, same thing and I thought because it worked initially it could be a grounding or noise problem as this system has no electrical plug and therefore no earth ground. Strange thing is...if you stop or sometimes change directions it comes back for one reading which further seems to be a ground or noise problem. I knew that this heart rate board was discrete and could be separately removed from the console so I removed the small door and checked the connection, it was securely attached. I once again called Precor and they ended up sending out a replacement Heart Rate board. It was received 5 days later and after installation, it worked a little longer and then did the exact same thing.

Now I was starting to get irritated as this is a brand new, very expensive system and the quality and reliability was now questionable. I called Precor again and spoke to a different representative and I explained the issue. He told me this was a known issue and was software related and they did not yet have a fix...but when it was figured out it would require an update by a service technician. I did appreciate his openness to the issue, as some companies skirt over the problems; however I find it hard to believe it is software related but hopefully this is the case. It seems more likely electrical or noise related simply because the way it comes back for one reading sometimes when you stop or reverse directions and it always works for a couple minutes when the system starts. I could actually understand a noise problem or grounding issue because most of the fitness centers have these units plugged in to a wall and therefore have an earth ground.

To tell me it is a software issue and exists on other units tells me that Precor did not properly test and debug these new units and the software/firmware as this is such an obvious issue. This is very disappointing as a consumer relying on a quality tested product for my dollars. When this is all said and done a couple months will be wasted as Precor irons out their issues with the consumer being used as the test bench.

For the connectors to be loose also makes me doubt that the console was properly tested. The console is shipped nicely packaged in a separate box and good connections rarely shake loose; if they are of good quality and lock. Heart Rate feedback is an integral part of this system and is important for an effective and safe workout. These issues show poor quality assurance for a product that should be solid and functionally stable before shipment. I give 2 stars because of my time wasted so far as a test bench and for the time to be wasted when they finally iron out a solution. If you are thinking about buying this trainer, I suggest you wait until they iron out the bugs so you do not waste your time and money as I have done. There is no question it is mechanically a good system, but it is not a complete package for home use with these bugs.

Precor Eliptical

It took a couple of weeks to arrive, but I love it! I use it about every other day. You can make it as easy or as difficult a workout as you wish. It is great to be able to go upstairs and workout and not have to drive to the gym. The assembly was not difficult, but the pieces are very heavy to carry to the second floor. The machine is easy to program, has a variety of levels, and it is a great overall workout!

Excellent Elliptical Crosstrainer

Precor makes an excellent Elliptical Crosstrainer. My wife teaches 9-10 Bodypump and Spinning classes per week and is an expert in fitness training. I purchased this machine mainly for her. She is very pleased with this machine. The only drawback that I see is that there is no power switch on the console. It is at the back of the machine near the power plug. Moving the machine into the house is at least a two man job. I did assemble it myself with very little difficulty and in about two hours. There are a few spots where a second person would make it easier however.
I highly recommend this product.

Good machine but not delivered 100% complete or fully functional

When my Precor EFX 5.33 Elliptical was delivered, I was disappointed that it was not 100% complete or fully functional. The heart rate monitor did not work (although I know my chest strap works because it works with other Precor Ellipticals at the gym). Also, the top cover/magazine rack for the front stand was missing from the box and had to be re-ordered from Precor. It is a solid, good quality machine, but at $4,500 I would have expected better quality control for a "Premium" Elliptical from Precor.

My new favorite elliptical

At the gym I noticed these machines were always already taken, but it wasn't until I got the chance to use one that I finally understood why people like them so much. I'll lay out the important points in handy list format...

PROS:
-Movement is just as "smooth and natural" as the description indicates
-Console has a diagram showing you which muscles you're working based on the incline of the ramp (not sure how accurate this is, but it's still neat)
-Perfect support and stability
-Moving handlebars allow you to work your triceps, biceps, and chest as well as your lower body
-Ability to set different types of goals (calories, time, heartrate)
-Gives you a great workout without putting strain on your joints
-"Calories burned" calculator seems more accurate than other machines'
-Buttons are laid out well and the display is easy to read

CONS:
-Way too expensive for most home users
-Both of the ones I've used have been a little squeaky

All in all this is an AWESOME elliptical and if you have the money to spend you won't regret buying this!

Good quality but has design flaws

I bought this about the middle of December 2009, so I've had it over three months now. I use this thing an hour a day, at least five days a week (can't run anymore because my knees won't take it). So this isn't a first impression kind of review.

While there are many things to recommend Precor for, this model has some problems that you should be aware of if you're thinking about buying one.

Pros:
-- overall excellent quality materials and build
-- machine motion is top notch, very smooth, no rough or jerky places within the range of travel -- which is important if you're actually going to spend even half an hour at stretch on it
-- excellent customer service and technical support from Precor, they left me with the definite impression that they care about their customers (and for the price they should)

Cons:
-- this unit has a couple of significant design flaws, see below

Amazon shipped the machine to my house with no problem, no complaints there. It came on a semi-tractor trailer, so be aware because they'll have to be able to get in front of your house with a truck that big. It's tail gate delivery. I had a couple of carts that the truck driver helped me set it on, and I rolled it into my garage. It's heavy, so one person it's going to pick it up and carry it around.

I'm a product design engineer, so I know something about what goes into the design and fabrication of this kind of product. I was also a technician for five years before I went to college, so I'm pretty handy. But I'm also busy, so I called Precor to get someone to assemble it. They gave me the name of their local rep, who I called -- and they called me back once, promised to show up in a week, but didn't. They also refused to answer my calls after that.

I called Precor twice more, who tried to contact the field rep. Nothing, no response from them. Precor apologized, but by now a month had gone by so I said I'd assemble it myself. They gave me their tech support number, which I did end up calling just to make sure I was doing everything right.

Note: getting a hold of people at Precor was easy, and I felt like they really went out of their way to help me. Their customer service and tech support get 5+ stars. I subtracted zero stars for the field rep not showing up. Hey, things like this can happen sometimes when you've got subcontractors.

Assembly was straight forward, no problem if you can use a wrench and a screw driver. There was one gummed up thread in one of the welded on nut plates, but I ran a tap through it and it was fine. At the end of assembly I was impressed, they really did use high quality materials and the component build quality is impressive. One gummed up thread is no big deal to me, it's very easy to happen and easy enough to fix
.

So then I started using it. I've used Precor ellipticals in gyms for years and always been impressed with them. For the money I spent I was *really* expecting something pretty close to the same kind of controls and kinematics. Why else would anybody spend the money on a Precor elliptical? But this unit is quite different from what you find in gyms, in two ways:

1) The control panel. Unlike the commercial grade machines, you cannot get on this thing, set the resistance where you want, and just go. Instead you HAVE to push a sequence of buttons when you first get on. It reminds me of certain well known computer operating systems, which insist on getting in your way as you work. Because they know better than you do, how you should live your life.

They've got all the buttons already built into the control panel. It would have been a piece of cake to make it work just like a commercial machine, where default is "step onto machine, set resistance where you want, and just go for as long as you want". If somebody wants to use the programs they can just push one of those buttons and start the program.

Instead, if you just want to set the resistance and go for 45 to 60 minutes -- without the stinking thing stopping in the middle of your workout -- you've got to push about half a dozen buttons. I spent time with their tech support making sure it's not just me, not knowing how the thing works. This IS how the EFX 5.31 works.

Dumb, unnecessarily complicated user control panel: minus one star. Once you know the button sequences you can live with it. Which is good because by the time you've bought it, you'll have to. But for this much money it really shouldn't be like this.

2) There was still room for a good rating until I learned about the kinematics of this elliptical. I've used probably every Precor model that's been in gyms (like Ballys) for the last ten years. There's never been one that I couldn't get on, and just stand up straight on while using it, without need to lean on the handle bars (and I go pretty fast, usually 45 to 60 minute work outs). The foot pedals and overall motion are such that it's comfortable to stand upright on their commercial machines. Note: I always use ellipticals with the ramp all the way at the bottom, lowest angle.

Precor has set up the kinematics of this machine quite different. I absolutely cannot stand up straight while using this machine, as it comes out of the box. It forces me to lean over on the hand rails. Which I may not mind when I'm 90 years old. I found this quite annoying. The kinematics of the EFX 5.31 are quite different from their commercial machines.

I'm six feet tall, and my wife is five feet tall. She can stand up straight while using this machine just fine. I've since had friends in to try it, and it seems that people on the shorter side can use it fine. But taller people generally have the same problem with it that I do, and find that they have to lean forward and grab onto the handle bars.

So, being an engineer (and having spent lots of money on it), I started looking into why. We went and tried a couple of commercial Precors in gyms and sure enough, my wife and I both can use them standing up with no problems. I did some measuring and I'd estimate that the foot pedals on my machine at home (the EFX 5.31) need to be (about) 3 inches further back than they are, and also the foot pedal angle on the 5.31 is different. Whether the foot pedal angles would be right if located 3 inches back I'm not sure.

But I found from playing with my home machine, that if I let my feet hang off the back of the pedals about 3 inches (meaning, I'm standing on top of the backs of the pedals), then I can stand up on it without leaning over, and use it just like the commercial Precors. At this, the backs of my feet almost touch the rear housing on the unit. But "almost" I can live with.

Which means that to use my home unit comfortably, I needed to build some wedges to go inside the foot pedals. I got some modeling clay, laid plastic sheet inside the pedals, and made a pattern with the clay (note, right and left foot pedals are identical). Then got some plaster of paris and made a mold from the clay patterns. Then got some epoxy from a hobby store and cast that in the mold, and made myself a couple of custom foot pedal inserts.

At this, I can now use my EFX 5.31 just like the commercial models they put in the gyms. It's now a very smooth, very stable, very nice machine to work out on. But it took some effort to get there.

Messed up kinematics on the EFX 5.31 elliptical machine: minus 2 stars. I still cannot believe they did this........???? Hello, Precor? What did you think it was, that makes people willing to spend the money you charge for elliptical machines?

I'm a product design engineer so maybe I'm being harsh here. But I cannot forgive this basic design flaw in the EFX 5.31. Were they trying to save pennies by making this thing just a little shorter? I know what extruded aluminum costs -- they really didn't save enough pennies to make it worth screwing up the excellent kinematics of their commercial machines.

This machine looks like it's kinematics and mechanics are about the same as their commercial models, but it's not (yet they charge big money for it anyway). Don't buy any elliptical machine that you haven't used for about half an hour continuously, to make sure it's going to be comfortable for you. I looked at many before I bought this one, and there's lots of machines out there with horrible kinematics. Fortunately I was able to fix this one so I can use it.

A step beyond elliptical

I took the plunge and bought this trainer for my home gym. I have tried numerous machines and found that most ellipticals have a few drawbacks. They are great for reducing impact, compared to a treadmill, but usually constrain movement to a fixed motion. Other than being able to vary the stride length a couple of inches on a few models, they all have exactly the same motion, over and over. It was difficult to find one that fit my gait, and at the same time be suitable for my wife who is only 5 feet tall. Actually impossible would be a better description.

This machine is unique, and should be in its own class of truly variable elliptical training. The stride can be ANYTHING you make it; from stepping to full running gait to a pedaling stride. It even allows a backward pedal stride if you want to really mix up the routine. The machine doesn't control the gait. YOU do, and you can vary it any time without touching any electronic controls. You'll need to try it to really understand.

We have over 20 machines in the home gym including a nice treadmill and stationary bike, but we just about need a sign up sheet for using the AMT in my house! We all like this machine. The price was steep, but this machine will get a lot of use, and the value we get from improved fitness is priceless. A cheaper machine that is more difficult to use was an option, but in the long run a more expensive machine that will actually get used is the better option.

The quality of the design and fabrication of the machine is excellent, and it should last for many, many years with only my family using it.

Very highly recommended!

A follow up after one full year of use: Every member of my family uses this elliptical trainer, so it has seen about 15-20 hours/week of use. It has been 100% reliable, and other than occasional cleaning has needed no maintenance. We remain completely satisfied with this elliptical trainer, and it remains our best investment in cardio training. The variable stride/gait of this machine allows virtually any user to get the most from this machine, and will allow you to work around soreness if necessary.

I can't run anymore but this is almost the same workout.

This machine rocks! My gym has 4 of these machines in addition to tons of ellipticals, treadmills and bikes - and I use it exclusively. I have been a life-long runner/triathlete, but after my second ACL reconstruction I had to give up running. With the AMT I get as close to a running stride as I can hope for with no knee jarring impact. It creates a natural stride that allows me to go easy with a shorter stride or harder stride that can stretch out. Even though ellipticals are low/no impact I have never been that pleased with the motion - it always feels limiting.

In addition to the run stride, I grab the two stationary handles in front (which also measure heart rate), lean forward a bit and get the same motion I do on my bike when I get out of the saddle for a hill climb. I will vary between the stride motion holding the moving handles and the climb motion holding the stationary handles and burn through almost as many calories and get my heart rate up like I used to running on a treadmill on an 8 setting. You can also do a good stair climbing motion but I don't normally work it that way. The machine also has nice resistant settings so I can crank it up when I'm climbing to simulate a serious hill and ease it down to a bit for the run stride.

If you can afford to buy this you will not be disappointed - hands down this the best cardio machine I have ever used. If you belong to a gym, lobby them to add this to their equipment. And especially if you love to run but had to hang up your shoes due to bad knees, this may just give you back some of those endorphin highs you used to get on a nice 5 mile run. Nice job Precore. Love this machine

I, too, do not own one and wish I could afford one. I use this at the gym all the time and love it. It's great to be able to change up my workout with climbing, elliptical and running motions all on one machine. One thing I didn't see mentioned in the description is that it is cordless. It runs on the power you generate by using it. Maybe Precor will come out with a home version that is a little more affordable in the future. One can dream....

I use this machine more than the half dozen others I have in my home gym

When I shopped for exercise equipment, the owner of the company where I bought it told me if he could only have one machine, he would choose a elliptical. I bought one and a couple of weeks later went back to get this treadmill. The treadmill gets much more use in my home, although the elliptical is great, and is probably much easier on the legs, knees, and feet. It also seems like it takes more effort than the treadmill and so it gets ignored a lot. For example, I often spend 100 minutes on my treadmill, but only 10-20 minutes on the elliptical.

I use a function that uses my heart rate to determine the incline and speed. Then I can turn my attention elsewhere. Recently I've been using the bicycle videos, Bike-o-Vison, which makes the exercise time just fly by! I've been doing one of the California Coast, which includes Big Sur, a favorite place of mine, so instead of biking through it, I'm on my treadmill. That's a great motivating system for me. I can't wait until tonorrow until I get to tour Washington D.C. (on my treadmill) and after that a tour of the rain forest or possibly Kauai. Treadmills are so flexible. They take you anywhere! :)

This is an excellent exercise option. I recommend it. You may not need all the options on this one. In fact, I ust use the HRC (heart rate) or the weight loss sessions. As I get stronger, I might want to do others, but those are flexible enough to do anything I should ever want to do, so a basic machine probably would have been enough.

Edited a year later to say that I finally have to have someone come out and check to see why it's making a noise. I'm thrilled to think that I've caused some wear and tear on it. LOL.

Excellent warranty!

After having a less expensive treadmill that had a lot of problems, I forked over the money for this one and am happy that I did. You get what you pay for. The cushion that this machine provides has saved my knees (high-quality running shoes also help). I did have a small problem with the belt, but thanks to the manufacturer's warranty, this was resolved quickly and at no additional cost to me. With any equipment, be sure to check-out the warranty and make sure that the company stands behind its product like Precor does.

This is such a high quality treadmill. My joints never feel worn after running, and I feel like my calves have been getting an extra burn since switching to this machine. The cushioning on this feels amazing. I'd definitely recommend this for any runner, or for any walkers who are healing from injury.

It's also one of the few machines I feel comfortable storing my keys, water bottle, watch, etc on without having them fall off. The length on the running band is also a really nice length for long strides.

It's a very sturdy machine, great for speed walking even on the highest incline. I also love the fact that it displays calories on a seperate screen so I don't have to keep switching between options.

Precor 9.31 Treadmill

This is a very solid, well built treadmill. My only wish for this model is that it had at least one user memory function. I have to re-enter my weight and age with every start up. User memory functions are available on higher end models, but I didn't need the additional features of those models and hence didn't want to spend the additional money. I am not a runner, just a fast walker, so the track length, speeds, and inclines levels are perfect for me. The included heart rate monitor chest strap is very useful for monitoring workouts.

It came unassembled and was very heavy. Two men had to deliver it. I engaged the local certified Precor repair company to set it up for me. I didn't watch the entire process, so I don't know how difficult it would be for a novice to assemble it. However, with the savings from Amazon, and the free shipping due to the Prime membership, even with the additional assembly fee - I saved a great deal over what the local Precor store was offering.

Solid, comfortable, and quiet.

My wife and I are very happy with this treadmill. It is sturdy, very heavy, and provides for a comfortable running experience. It was difficult deciding between Precor treadmills, but I am glad I opted for the 9.31 with the Footplant Technology and Ground Effects Technology. The cushioning adjusts perfectly for my wife and myself. The treadmill arrived by freight one week from the date I purchased it online using free super saver shipping. Assembly was fast and simple using the provided allen wrenches. This treadmill feels as sturdy and as comfortable as the Precor and Life Fitness machines at the gym. The motor is very quiet and the machine does not rattle or shake while running.

Well made, quality product. Consider Professional Delivery

We haven't used this much so can't review the operation adequately. The Precor 9.31 is very well made and I can say that you are paying for a quality product. It is also VERY heavy (read the other reviews). I usually do not pay for "set up and installation" and did not in this case either. I assembled the treadmill myself without assistance with only one very minor problem that was easily solved. The delivery man graciously offered to assist me in carrying it to my basement exercise room (he was not required to do so). This entailed one flight of stairs with a 90 degree turn. After an initial try, we decided to open the box and carry the machine down in pieces. This, in my opinion, was a mistake. Leave it in the box as it is very well packed and we were only able to minimally reduce the weight. My suggestions follow: 1. Leave it in its original packaging. 2. If this treadmill will be delivered to a 1st floor location, I believe the average person (I'm 45) with the help of a delivery person (properly tipped) or a friend (or 2) can get this into position and assemble it without problem and thus avoid a delivery and assembly fee. Did you gather that it is VERY heavy (approx 350 lbs and somewhat awkward. One end has the motor etc). 3. If it must be delivered to an upstairs, downstairs or unusual location, serious consideration should be given to paying as much as $200 for professional delivery and installation. In my humble opinion, this is a rare case where a significant fee for delivery would be warranted. We got lucky not damaging the unit during delivery (or damaging our floor/walls), damage that could potentially be covered by a professional delivery service. The assembly itself was not particularly difficult.

Great piece of equipment, one little flaw...

It is very heavy so make sure that it's delivered to the spot you want it.

Compared to other ellipticals I've used in the gym, this one is the best because it feels great, no over extension, easy to operate.

The problems I've had were a little knocking sound soon after using it. I found out that one of the bolts was a little loose. I probably didn't tighten it enough.

Tightening the bolts made the noise go away.

The other issue is that it doesn't have an automatic shutoff. It also can't be turned off from the display panel.

You have to reach back all the way to the bottom of the machine to turn it off. So that's the most annoying flaw it has.

Other than that, the training programs are good.

Make sure to measure your ceiling so you don't put it in a spot that where you might hit your head if the ramp goes up. Where we have it in the basement, the ceiling is low, that's why I bring it up.

We've had family come over and use it, and they like it as well.

I love this elliptical

The Precor EFX 5.25 is a commercial quality elliptical fitness exercise machine for the home. It is billed as smaller to fit into your home, but it is longer than my treadmill and unlike the treadmill does not fold away. However, unlike the treadmill, on the EFX 5.25 you are working your entire body in a low-impact way that does not put stress on any joints or weak areas.

Make sure you think about where you want it delivered because you will need to do some of the assembly and it is not easily moved. Every tool you need to put the EFX 5.25 together was included. It took a little over an hour until the machine was up and running. I did have some help, but I could have done everything myself. The housing that covers the wheel assembly was damaged in transit so I had to call the company to get replacement parts. They were extremely helpful and promised to have them to me in a couple of days at no cost and basically no questions even when I told them that I had gotten the EFX through the Amazon Vine program. All the metal, paint, plastic pieces, rubber are high quality. It is obviously meant to last.

I am short and most ellipticals I have tried do not work for me because the stride is just too long and my knees are hyper-extended. The stride for this is shorter and slightly like a stair-stepper so I don't have the extension problems. The handlebars were comfortable. I had a little trouble adjusting the CrossRamp angle because you have to be moving and holding the buttons at the same time to adjust it. I feel sure that after I have gotten used to using the elliptical that I will be more comfortable adjusting the angles. The elliptical makes no noticeable noise as you are exercising. There are two user inputs, several different exercise programs, and heart rate sensors. The monitor gives distance, time, calories, and the number of strides you make in a minute. I found it to be an easy machine to start using first thing.

I say "easy to use" but I must confess, that within half a mile I was feeling the burn. I used a basic program with a little resistance. I am a distance walker, I lift 40-pound bags of cattle feed weekly, and today I was working on rock landscaping. I am not someone who decided to "start" an exercise program, but this machine was using muscles that I don't use in the normal day, so I can tell it will be good for cross training and for those days that I can't train outdoors.

After several weeks of using it now I have to say I am in love with it. A few days and I was up to speed on a good program. There is a slight twist for me as I use the handlebars so it is working my core also. I am using it in addition to my usual distance walking. I think it is great.

Wanted one until I tried it

Went to test one of these new "generation" Precors with the steel crossramp. Did not like it at all! The smoothness and fluid motion of the extruded aluminum was not there. This model was also not long enough stride for me even though I am 5'3". Buyer beware and try before you buy. Rated 2star because Precors crossramp is the best elliptical design, but the "new" metal ruins the experiance.
